The "La" in Kamala's name comes from her Indian heritage. Kamala is of mixed Indian and Jamaican descent, and her first name, Kamala, is derived from the Sanskrit word for "lotus," which is a symbol of purity, enlightenment, and rebirth in Indian culture.  The name "Kamala" is a common Indian name, and "La" is simply the last syllable of her first name.

Kamala's mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, who was Indian, named her with a strong connection to their Indian roots, and "Kamala" reflects that heritage. The name has also come to symbolize Kamala Harris's role as a groundbreaking leader and the first woman of South Asian and African American descent to hold the office of Vice President of the United States.
